NEW ORLEANS, LA | October 9, 2019—Election Day is just three days away, and the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice (PCEJ–http://powercoalition.org) continues to roll out online tools and resources that can help voters make more informed decisions when they go to the polls this Saturday, October 12.
Building on our Legislator Scorecard (http://powercoalition.org/legislator-scorecards-2019/), which was released as Early Voting got underway, we have now added responses to our Candidate Survey (http://powercoalition.org/candidate-survey-2019/) to our website. We’ve also added a brief explainer on the roles and responsibilities for many of the offices that Louisianans will vote on this Saturday, titled “What Do Your Elected Officials Do?” (http://powercoalition.org/elected-officials/)
“These tools are intended to give our fellow Louisianans the knowledge they need to make informed decisions at the ballot box,” says Ashley Shelton, Executive Director of the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice. “We know that people are more likely to vote, and vote all the way down the ballot, when they have easy access to that knowledge, and better understand the election process and the people who are running to represent them.”
After candidate qualifying closed on August 8, we mailed out a 20-question survey to every candidate for state senate and state representative in Louisiana. Those 20 questions were drawn directly from bills that were voted on in the State Capitol over the previous legislative term (2016-2019), and they covered issues that are central to our mission as an organization and the missions of our partner organizations.
The issues we asked about covered a wide range of categories, and included things like raising the minimum wage and giving local governments control over their own minimum wage rates, affordable housing, criminal justice reform, redistricting, taxation, the environment, and more.
Along with the survey and our new “What Do Your Elected Officials Do?” page, we also offer many other helpful tools, ranging from a link to Find Your Polling Place to pertinent information on every House and Senate District in the state, which was compiled by our partners at the Louisiana Budget Project.
The Power Coalition for Equity and Justice works to build voice and power in traditionally ignored communities. We are a coalition of groups from across Louisiana whose mission is to organize in impacted communities, educate and turn out voters, and fight for policies that create a more equitable and just system in Louisiana.
