



Call for Ten Minute One Act Plays
Guidelines
High School
-
Applicants may only submit one play.
-
10 minutes max (10 pages of text, 12 point font not including title page)
-
6 characters or fewer for High School
-
Title page with playwright name, city, email, school
-
First page must include character breakdown and 2-3 sentence synopsis
-
6 Selected works by students will be performed in staged readings at Mid City Civic Theatre on Saturday, September 26, 2026 at the Stage the Vote Festival.
College Undergraduates, Graduate School, and Adult

Applicants may only submit one play.

First page must include character breakdown and 2-3 sentence synopsis

Adult play will be performed in the evening at the Stage the Vote Festival and as scheduled by the the Power Coalition within non-traditional settings ie. community centers, stores, residences, barbershops, beauty shops, churches, college campuses.
Plays should address at least one of the following themes:

The importance of voting, history of voting, and/or voter disenfranchisement
-
The importance of civic engagement and/or what civic engagement contributes to a democracy.

Judging Criteria
Our panel of judges - educators, playwrights, voting advocates, clergy, and community members - will select plays for staged readings and/or performance as casted by Mid-City Theatre based on the following criteria:

How well the plays link to the themes

Does it have a clear beginning, middle, and end

Are the characters compelling, with distinct and consistent voices
-
Is the dialogue original and authentic, with a clear sense of voice and a natural, engaging flow
Submission Deadline
Submit plays by August 31, 2026
Awards
High School
One High School playwright will receive a $250 award from the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice.
Winning plays will be circulated and made available to high schools throughout the state of Louisiana. Winners will be announced at the Stage the Vote Festival on September, 26, 2026.
College Undergraduate/Graduate/Adult
The Undergraduate College playwright will receive $500, the graduate/Adult playwright will receive a $1,000 award.
The awarded plays will be shared with college liberal arts programs and will be featured in educational performances across Louisiana, as scheduled and presented by the Power Coalition for Equity and Justice.
The winners will be selected at the completion of judging prior to September, 26, 2026.
The winning play in the Adult category will be performed.
