Commitment 2019: Early voting starts Saturday for Nov. 16 election
Early voting for the Nov. 16, 2019, Gubernatorial General Election begins Saturday.Voters statewide will be choosing Louisiana's next governor and secretary of state, as well as a handful of legislative seats.Polls will open at local Registrar of Voters offices from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day starting this Saturday, Nov. 2 and running through next Saturday, Nov. 9, but will be closed on Sunday, Nov. 3.What's on the ballot?Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards faces Republican businessman Eddie Rispone. Edwards is seeking his second term. There is also a runoff for secretary of state. Republican incumbent Kyle Ardoin is being challenged by democrat Gwen Collins-Greenup. A rematch from the 2018 election. Due to term limits there are dozens of legislative seats on the ballot. Voters in several parishes are also being asked to choose a new associate judge for the 1st Supreme Court District. The seat was left vacant after Justice Greg Guidry was appointed to a spot on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Among the largest local races, are the runoffs for St. Tammany Parish president and sheriff. Incumbent Pat Brister was forced into a runoff by Mike Cooper after failing to garner more than half of the votes cast in the Oct. 12 primary election. Sheriff Randy Smith was also forced into a runoff, facing Tim Lentz. St. Tammany Parish voters will also decide on two council seats. In Lafourche Parish, Republicans Archie Chaisson and Luci Sposito will face off in the last leg of the race to be the parish's next president. Jimmy Cantrelle chose not to seek a second term. Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Jerry Larpenter is not seeking his ninth term. Hoping to succeed him are Republicans Blayne Bergeron and Tim Soignet. Voters across Jefferson Parish will decide the runoffs for parish council districts 2 and 3. The Jefferson Parish Registrar of Voters office has three locations:Eastbank: Joseph S.
